Moisturizers serve many purposes. The most important use of a
moisturizer is to PREVENT moisture from being lost from the skin’s
surface. It is a fallacy that moisturizers put moisture into the skin.
Moisture comes from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water to flush
the system and keep the organs well hydrated will allow for excess water
to be available to the skin. The skin is one of the last organs to
receive the much needed water used by the body for every function
imaginable. It is necessary to apply a barrier to the skin’s
surface that will prevent trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL).
Moisturizers vary from oil-free to heavy oil-based creams that aid in
the hydration of the skin.
